Cards in the Dark

You are in a completely dark room with a deck of 52 cards. 12 of the cards are face up, but they are randomly distributed throughout the deck. You need to put the cards into two piles (not necessarily of the same size) so that each pile has the same number of face up cards. There are no markings on the cards that would help you identify the face up cards in any way. You can also flip cards to upside down if you want (changing the number of total face up cards). How do you do it?

Put the top 12 cards into a pile and the rest of the cards into another pile. Flip all the cards in the 12 pile upside down. For example, if you had 10 face up cards and 2 face down cards in the 12 pile, that means that there were 2 face up cards in the other pile. By flipping the 12 pile, you would have 2 face up in both. If you had 5 face up cards and 7 face down cards in the 12 pile, you would have had 7 face up cards in the other pile. Flipping the 12 card pile gives you 7 face up cards in both
